Is There Still a Tax Credit for New Windows?

Birmingham Window Installers gets asked about the federal window tax credit constantly, and the honest answer has changed.

The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit under section 25C applied to qualifying property placed in service on or after January 1, 2023 and before December 31, 2025. Legislation signed in July 2025 brought that end date forward, and windows installed after it do not qualify.

A lot of contractor websites have not updated, so you will still find pages promising a $600 credit. If a quote leans on that credit to justify the price, ask when it was last checked.

Below: what the credit was worth while it ran, what the rules were, what is actually left, and how to weigh a window project without it.

Window Tax Credits and Rebates in Birmingham, AL

What the Credit Was

  • 30 percent of the qualifying cost
  • Capped at $600 a year for exterior windows and skylights combined
  • Inside an overall $1,200 annual cap covering several improvement categories
  • Windows had to meet Energy Star Most Efficient certification
  • Labour and installation never counted — only the product itself

That last point surprised people regularly. On a $9,000 window project where the windows themselves were perhaps $6,000, the credit was calculated on the product cost and then capped at $600 anyway. It was a useful offset rather than a transformative one.

From 2025 there was also a qualified manufacturer identification requirement, meaning the product needed a specific identifying number to be claimable at all.

What Changed

Public Law 119-21, signed on July 4, 2025, modified a group of energy credits including 25C. The practical effect for windows is that property placed in service after December 31, 2025 no longer qualifies.

If you installed qualifying windows before that date and have not claimed the credit, that is a conversation for your tax preparer rather than a closed door — the eligibility attaches to when the property was placed in service.

We are not tax advisers and this is not tax advice. Anything involving your own return should go through a qualified tax professional, and the IRS publishes the current position on its own site.

What Is Actually Left

Utility Programmes

Utility-level efficiency incentives are separate from federal tax law and are not affected by the change. They vary by provider and change on their own schedule, so the only reliable answer is to check with your electricity provider directly before assuming either way.

Most Birmingham-area households are served by Alabama Power. Ask specifically about residential efficiency incentives and whether window replacement qualifies, since programmes often target insulation and HVAC ahead of glazing.

State and Local

State and municipal programmes exist in some places and not others, and they come and go. Worth asking about rather than assuming.

Manufacturer and Installer Promotions

Seasonal manufacturer rebates are common and frequently larger than the old federal credit was. They are not tied to legislation, so they are unaffected by any of this.

The Savings That Do Not Depend on Policy

The credit was always the smallest part of the case for better windows. What remains is the part that actually recurs.

In Birmingham the cooling season does the heavy lifting. Glass with a low solar heat gain coefficient rejects heat before it enters the house, which is worth more here than in a climate where the priority is keeping heat in. Low-emissivity coatings and argon fill both contribute, and neither depends on a tax provision.

Comfort is the benefit people notice first — rooms that were unusable on summer afternoons becoming usable, and draughts disappearing in winter. Our energy efficient windows page covers the specifications that matter.

How to Weigh a Project Without It

  • Compare quotes on the window and the installation, not on an incentive
  • Ask for the U-factor and the solar heat gain coefficient rather than a vague efficiency claim
  • Prioritise west and south-facing windows if you are phasing the work
  • Factor in that windows last decades, so the comparison is against years of cooling cost rather than months
  • Treat any rebate you do find as a bonus rather than part of the arithmetic

A $600 credit on a $9,000 project was under 7 percent. Choosing the right glass package for this climate is worth considerably more than that over the life of the windows, and it is entirely within your control.

If a Quote Cites the Credit

Ask when they last checked. It is a reasonable question and the answer tells you something about how current the rest of their information is.

It is not necessarily bad faith — the change was recent and a lot of marketing material has lagged it. But a number in a quote should be a number you can rely on.
